This study proposes a simplified mathematical model to describe the processes occurring in an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (ASBBR) treating lipid-rich wastewater. The reactor, subjected to rising organic loading rates, contained biomass immobilized cubic polyurethane foam matrices, and was operated at 32 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C, using 24-h batch cycles. In the adaptation period, the reactor was fed with synthetic substrate for 46 days and was operated without agitation. Whereas agitation was raised to 500 rpm, the organic loading rate (OLR) rose from 0.3 g chemical oxygen demand (COD) . L(-1) . day(-1) to 1.2 g COD . L(-1) . day(-1). The ASBBR was fed fat-rich wastewater (dairy wastewater), in an operation period lasting for 116 days, during which four operational conditions (OCs) were tested: 1.1 +/- 0.2 g COD . L(-1) . day(-1) (OC1), 4.5 +/- 0.4 g COD . L(-1) . day(-1) (OC2), 8.0 +/- 0.8 g COD . L(-1) . day(-1) (OC3), and 12.1 +/- 2.4 g COD . L(-1) . day(-1) (OC4). This study aimed to evaluate the viability of using treated residuary water from the Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant of Ribeiro Preto to grow vegetables, through the characterization and quantification of parasites, coliforms, and heavy metals. Three equal cultivation areas were prepared. The first was irrigated with treated/chlorinated (0.2 mg L(-1)) wastewater, the second one with treated wastewater without chlorination, and the third site with potable water, which was the control group. The presence of Hymenolepis nana, Enterobius vermicularis, nematode larvae, and Entamoeba coli was verified in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) samples. Although nematode larvae were observed in rocket salad (Eruca sativa L.), no significant differences were found between the number of parasites and type of irrigation water used. No significant differences were found between the number of fecal coliforms in vegetables and the different types of irrigation. However, the vegetables irrigated with treated effluent without chlorination showed higher levels of fecal coliforms. In this work we studied the electrochemical treatment of a tannery wastewater using dimensionally stable anodes (DSA (R)) containing tin, iridium, ruthenium, and titanium. The electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition of the polymeric precursors. The electrolyses were performed under galvanostatic conditions, at room temperature. Effects of the oxide composition, current density, and effluent conductivity were investigated, and the current efficiency was calculated as a function of the time for the performed electrolyses. Results showed that all the studied electrodes led to a decrease in the content of both total phenolic compounds and total organic carbon (TOC), as well as lower absorbance in the UV-vis region. Toxicity tests using Daphnia similis demonstrated that the electrochemical treatment reduced the wastewater toxicity. The use of DSA (R) type electrodes in the electrochemical treatment of tannery wastewater proved to be useful since it can promote a decrease in total phenolic compounds, TOC, absorbance, and toxicity. This work reports on the effect of initial substrate concentration on COD consumption, pH, and H(2) production during cassava processing wastewater fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. Five initial COD wastewater concentrations, namely 5.0, 7.5, 10.7, 15.0, and 30.0 g/L, were used. The results showed that higher substrate concentrations (30.0 and 15.0 COD/L) led to lower H(2) yield as well as less efficient substrate conversion into H(2). On the other hand, initial COD concentrations of 10.7, 7.5 and 5 g/L furnished 1.34, 1.2 and 2.41 mol H(2)/mol glucose, with efficiency of glucose conversion into H(2) of 34, 30, and 60% (mol/mol), respectively. These results demonstrate that cassava processing wastewater, a highly polluting effluent, can be successfully employed as substrate for H(2) production by C acetobutylicum at lower COD concentrations. The electrochemical treatment of a synthetic tannery wastewater, prepared with several compounds used by finishing tanneries, was studied in chloride-free media. Boron-doped diamond (Si/BDD), antimony-doped tin dioxide (Ti/SnO(2)-Sb), and iridium-antimony-doped tin dioxide (Ti/SnO(2)-Sb-Ir)were evaluated as anode. The influence of pH and current density on the treatment was assessed by means of the parameters used to measure the level of organic contaminants in the wastewater; i.e., total phenols, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), and absorbance. Results showed that faster decrease in these parameters occurred when the Si/BDD anode was used. Good results were obtained with the Ti/SnO(2)-Sb anode, but its complete deactivation was reached after 4h of electrolysis at 25 mA cm(-2), indicating that the service life of this electrode is short. The Ti/SnO(2)-Sb-Ir anode is chemically and electrochemically more stable than the Ti/SnO(2)-Sb anode, but it is not suitable for the electrochemical treatment under the studied conditions. No significant changes were observed for electrolyses performed at different pH conditions with Si/BDD, and this electrode led to almost complete mineralization after 4 h of electrolysis at 100mAcm(-2). This paper presents the development of a procedure, which enables the analysis of nine pharmaceutical drugs in wastewater using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) associated with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for the sample preparation. Experimental design was applied to optimize the in situ derivatization and the SPME extraction conditions. Ethyl chloroformate (ECF) was employed as derivatizing agent and polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB) as the SPME fiber coating. A fractional factorial design was used to evaluate the main factors for the in situ derivatization and SPME extraction. Thereafter, a Doehlert matrix design was applied to find out the best experimental conditions. The method presented a linear range from 0.5 to 10 mu g/L, and the intraday and interday precision were lower than 16%. A escassez de água e a grande geração de esgoto doméstico com necessidade de tratamento estimulam o uso de águas residuárias na agricultura. A irrigação por gotejamento caracteriza-se como um sistema seguro para esta finalidade, mas possui como barreira tecnológica o entupimento dos gotejadores. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se selecionar modelos de gotejadores e manejos mitigadores do entupimento por uso de água residuária oriunda de tratamento secundário de esgoto doméstico. Desenvolveu-se o estudo em três etapas: (I) a caracterização de 15 modelos de gotejador novos, (II) a préseleção dos emissores e (III) a seleção da combinação manejo e modelo. Os manejos foram controle, cloração a 0,5 mg L-1 de cloro residual livre ao final da irrigação medido ao final do sistema, ar comprimido a 1,96 kPa na entrada dos emissores e a combinação de cloração e ar comprimido, utilizando-se filtragem de areia (De = 0,59 mm), disco (120 mesh) e tela (200 mesh) em todos os tratamentos. Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a utilização dos contratos de parceria públicoprivada, como um meio de captação de recursos da iniciativa privada para os investimentos em estações de tratamento de esgotos no Brasil. Para tanto, inicialmente, diagnosticou-se a situação atual dos serviços de tratamento de esgotos, as necessidades de recursos para a sua universalização, os investimentos realizados e o marco regulatório existente. Em seguida, para se discutir o ingresso de recursos privados, caracterizou-se o ambiente definido pela legislação brasileira para os contratos de parceria público-privada, bem como os vetores de riscos presentes neste ambiente de captação de recursos para as estações de tratamento de esgotos. O presente trabalho propõe uma metodologia científica, com critérios bem definidos, para avaliar e quantificar o desempenho ambiental e a renovabilidade de processos de tratamento de esgoto, numa base única: a exergia. O desempenho ambiental é quantificado através do cálculo da eficiência exergética ambiental, definida como a razão da exergia do efeito útil do processo pela exergia total consumida dos recursos humanos e naturais, incluindo todas as entradas exergéticas. O cálculo da renovabilidade é feito por meio do índice exergético de renovabilidade definido como como a razão entre a exergia dos produtos pela soma das exergias não renováveis, a exergia destruída, a exergia de desativação e a exergia das emissões e residuos. A metodologia foi aplicada a três processos de tratamento de esgoto: dois biológicos (aeróbio e anaeróbio) e um físico-químico (TQA). O cálculo dos indicadores exergéticos foi realizado para cada um destes processos e foi observado que o processo com maiores valores de desempenho ambiental e renovabilidade, considerando o metano e o lodo do processo como efeito útil, foi o processo RAFA Lagoa Facultativa, com valores respectivamente de n (0,983) e lâmbda(7,060). O presente trabalho discute o recebimento de lixiviado de aterros sanitários em estações de tratamento do sistema público de esgotos para tratamento conjunto. Descreve os processos de geração do lixiviado nos aterros e faz uma avaliação desse recebimento em quatro estações de tratamento em operação no Estado de São Paulo que empregam processos biológicos de tratamento por lodos ativados convencional e por batelada, lagoas de estabilização (anaeróbia seguida de facultativa) e lagoas aeradas. Também apresenta a variação da produção de lixiviado em aterros sanitários em função dos períodos de chuva e seca, estabelecidos pela precipitação observada no período avaliado. Conclui que o tratamento conjunto de lixiviado de aterro é uma alternativa a ser considerada no planejamento dos sistemas de resíduos sólidos e de esgotos sanitários. The present work was focused on a methodological assessment for defining cost-effective measures regarding to wastewater sanitation in rural areas and was carried out within the project AQUA Project – Preliminary Studies for the Water Framework Directive Implementation at the Minho and Lima’s Rivers Basins. In order to assure a good ecological and chemical status in water bodies according to Water Framework Directive, a set of priority and complementary actions combined with a cost-effectiveness analysis was used to select a wastewater treatment strategy to increase public attendance. Using geoprocessing methodologies and geographic information multicriteria analysis (e.g.: soil, land use, topography), locations with high potential for implementation of low-energy wastewater treatment systems were identified and worked out with cost-functions. The results show that a combination of centralized and decentralized plants allow a cost-effectiveness attendance of 1,51 k¤/equivalent inhabitant in Minho and Lima’s river basins. The approach indicates that low-energy wastewater treatment plants are interesting options with a promising cost-effectiveness potential in rural areas.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants are recognized reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Three municipal wastewater treatment plants differing on the dimensions and bio-treatment processes were compared for the loads of amoxicillin-, tetracycline-, and ciprofloxacinresistant heterotrophic bacteria, enterobacteria, and enterococci in the raw inflow and in the treated effluents. The sewage received by each plant, in average, corresponded to 85,000 inhabitant equivalents (IE), including pretreated industrial effluents (?30%) in plant activated sludge, 105,000 IE, including pretreated hospital effluents (?15%) in plant trickling filter, and 2,000 IE, exclusively of domestic sewage, in plant submerged aerated filter. The presence of pretreated industrial effluents or of pretreated hospital sewage in the raw inflow did not imply significantly higher densities (per milliliter or per IE) of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the raw wastewater. Longer hydraulic residence periods (24 h) corresponded to higher bacterial removal rates than shorter periods (12 and 9 h), although such efficiency did not imply significant average decreases in the antibiotic resistance prevalence of the treated effluent. The present study proposes the use of the Air Micro-Bubble Bioreactor (AMBB), with a working volume of 14 dm3 and a hydraulic retention time of 14 days, operating in continuous mode to treat winery wastewater from second racking period, for seven different runs, during 167 days. The organic loads fluctuations, usual in the winemaking industry, and the aeration time rate (ATR), both related to energy costs, were the studied variables. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was selected as a key parameter to monitor the AMBB performance. The total polyphenol compounds were also followed. The effect of the organic loading rate OLR was assessed by adjusting feed substrate concentration between 0.16-0.44 kg COD m-3 d-1. The ATR varied between 1, 5 and 15 min h-1. Wastewater management has a central role in sustainable development, and, in this context, an integrated management of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) can be important. WWTP discharge complex effluents and for a new strategy in environmental protection ecotoxicological evaluation should complement the usual chemical evaluation. The EU project WW4Environment was set up for a WWTP located in Lisbon area and discharging into Tagus estuary (Portugal). One of the main objectives of the project is to optimize the management of the WWTP in terms of environmental impact. A battery of toxicity tests with organisms bearing different functions at the ecosystem level (the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the crustaceans Thamnocephalus platyurus and Daphnia magna, and the plant Lemna minor) was used to characterize the wastewater in the different treatment phases. V. fischeri, test organism for Microtox test, was the most sensitive species in WWTP samples evaluation. Microtox, Alga, and Daphnia tests were able to distinguish two levels of treatment and to assess toxicity removal efficiency. The results demonstrated not only that the treatment efficiently reduced wastewater toxicity, but also that the use of an ecotoxicological approach can contribute to the environmental management of the treatment plant.

Applicability of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) to enhance colour removal in mesophilic UASB reactors treating textile wastewater

This work assessed the applicability of the redox mediator anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) to enhance colour removal in mesophilic UASB reactors treating textile wastewater under different operational conditions, such as different electron donor (ethanol) concentrations and different HRT. The anaerobic reactors were able to remove reasonably well the colour of the textile wastewater (35-63%) even when operated with a relatively short HRT (6 h), being a good option for textile effluents pre-treatment. Aditionally, colour removal efficiency was positively influenced not only by the addition of ethanol as external electron donor, but also by the initial wastewater absorbance. Although the applicability of AQDS is reported in the literature to enhance remarkably colour removal from synthetic dye-containing wastewaters, especially for recalcitrant azo dyes, the same effect was not evident in the present study with the textile wastewater tested, since the reactors did not show significant differences on decolourisation capacity.

This study investigated the effects of the electrolytic treatment in the simulated wastewater with aromatic amine n-phenyl-n-isopropyl-p-phenylenediamine (Flexzone 3P®) using Ti/TiRuO2 electrodes under 0.025 A/cm² (DC) for different electrolysis durations (5; 15; 30; 45 and 60 min). Conductivity, pH, UV-visible spectra, gas chromatograms, toxicity and biodegradation tests were carried out. During the electrolytic treatment the pH decreased and conductivity increased slightly. After 60 min of electrolysis, the concentration of Flexzone 3P decreased by 65.1%. UV-vis spectra and chromatograms of simulated wastewater showed changes in the molecular structure of the aromatic amine. After 5 and 15 min of electrolysis, the simulated wastewater containing the Flexzone 3P showed detoxification by Saccharomyces cerevisiae toxicity test. The electrolysis of 5 min improved the biodegradation of the simulated wastewater containing Flexzone 3P.

Efficient water use is one of the most important requirements of cleaner production, and the use of the wastewater from concrete production can be an important means to this end. However, there are no Brazilian studies on the quality of concrete plant wastewater and the activities in which such water can be used. This paper aims to evaluate the quality of concrete plant wastewater and to propose guidelines for its treatment for non-potable applications. Wastewater samples were collected from three points in the studied treatment system, and tests were later performed in the laboratory to evaluate the water quality. The results obtained were compared with the limit values for the quality parameters that have been used for the analysis of the non-potable water supply in Brazil. The results indicate a need to at least add coagulation and pH correction processes to the treatment system.

There are many studies and reviews on advanced processes to treat secondary wastewater from industries which also address the challenges and limitations to water reuse and the hygienic concerns especially in food industries. However, the challenges associated with treating a secondary wastewater to provide drinking water quality become clear when real wastewater is treated in batch and in pilot scale. The limitations are several, particularly in food industries. Hence, this review aims to present an overview and a discussion regarding the challenges and proposals related to the advanced treatment of food industry wastewater to provide drinking water quality, elucidating some experimental and theoretical questions surrounding such processes. Valuable experimental advice which is not usually found in research papers will be provided, for instance, which oxidation treatment should be chosen, which initial experiments should be carried, and which methodology should be followed to evaluate the kinetics constants in different situations will be provided, along with methodology issues.; 2012
